Continued provocations and beating of political prisoner

http://www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/New%20Folder/cuba_ultimas2.html

(GUANTANAMO, CUBA, December 27, 2001) – On December 26, 2001, the political prisoner Ernesto Lucas Corral Cabrera, 28 years old, became a victim of the continual provocations of Captain Víctor Reyes Cobas, re-educator in Ward A-500, in the provincial prison of "Combinado de Guantánamo".

This lackey, at the service of the repressive Cuban system, tried questioning the moral and political principals of the prisoner, whom defended them valiantly.  But before this questioning, this young member of the opposition was beaten with the baton and violently pushed all the while being verbally offended by this henchman at the service of Fidel Castro.

Lucas Corral now has serious haematomas, as a result of the beating with a baton by this official with a dark military trajectory, who tried through force and under false representations to state that in Cuba, in the jails of the dictator Fidel Castro, there are no political prisoners, and that the 5 spies being held in the United States are political prisoners.

Critical nutrition situation in the provincial prison of "Combinado Guantánamo"

http://www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/New%20Folder/cuba_ultimas2.html

(GUANTANAMO, CUBA, December 20, 2001) - Political prisoner Alexander Lobaina Jiménez, 31 years old, is unjustly imprisoned in the prison "Combinado de Guantánamo" where he is waiting for his fixed trial for the supposed crime of illegal exiting from national territory.

In spite of the short amount of time he has been in this penitentiary center, and a petition from the prosecutor for 8 years imprisonment, he is feeling the harshness of the jail system of the dictator, where prisoners are given rotten food and in very small amounts.

The nutrition in Cuban jails is alarming, the food is cooked without any consideration for hygiene and is served rotten to prisoners, which causes them stomach ailments such as ulcers and chronic gastritis.

The hypocritical and totalitarian government of Cuba wastes millions of pesos in the campaign to free the 5 spies incarcerated in a federal prison in Miami who have commodities and care that many Cuba on the island that are not in jail wish they could have.

Prisoners tell of the experiences in the Department of State Security and the Contra Military Intelligence

http://www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/New%20Folder/cuba_ultimas2.html

(GUANTANAMO, CUBA, December 20, 2001) –– Political prisoners Alexander Lobaina Jiménez, 31 years old, and Alberto Martínez Martínez, 17 years old, recount their experiences in the cells of the Department of Operations of the State Security and of the contra military intelligence, during the initial process of their incarceration for the supposed crime of illegal exist from national territory.

According to declarations made by Alberto Martínez Fernández, the father of the young man Alberto, during the 18 days of interrogation in both of these units of repression, they were the object of psychological and physical torture, confined to cells void of all light, night and day is indistinguishable, and the temperature in these cells is approximately  33° C (91° F), in spite of constant humidity in the cells.  From those cells they were taken to interrogation rooms with air conditioners that are left on practically 24 hours a day, maintaining the room at approximately 8° C (46° F).

These young men asked of the First Lieutenant Lamorrut and Major Caraballo, who are instructors of the case, to turn off the air-conditioning, and their response was for them to shut-up, that they were the ones in charge.

When they were captured on the frontier by border patrols, they were the object of offences against their manhood.

Alexander and Alberto attempted to abandon the country driven by harassment and persecution by the repressive Cuban system at the service of the autocrat Fidel Castro, whom through demagogues methods has manipulated the human mind, turning Cubans into marionettes at his service, and to those that oppose it they impose extremely severe and unscrupulous methods such as those being imposed upon these young victims of the dictatorship in the Caribbean island.

* Housing officials in Guantánamo accused of mistreatment

http://www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/New%20Folder/cuba_ultimas2.html

(GUANTANAMO, CUBA, December 17, 2001) - Enrique Leonard Olivares, who lives at "calle 18 norte, esquina 6 oeste, edificio 75, apartamento 390-D, Reparto Caribe" in Guantánamo, together with Clara Medina and Miguel Leonard appeared last November 29th, before the municipal housing office in response to a citation given to them by said municipal office, to analyze a housing process.  Other people also attended.

They accuse, before the public opinion, the director of the housing office and the attorney Moraima for the verbal abuse which they received during the meeting, wherein these officials allowed talk about one of the items in litigation.

This kind of abuse by officials from the municipal housing office are as commonplace as drinking a glass of water and much more frequent in the investigations department of this entity which at the time of conducting its habitual evictions they want to beat the inhabitants of the house.

However, the government office in the province which frequently receives complaints regarding this problem, do not take any measures to eradicate this violation.

Mother of minor children is fined for trying to earn a living to sustain the family

http://www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/New%20Folder/cuba_ultimas2.html

(GUANTANAMO, CUBA, December, 2001) – Mrs. Iberia Castán, a 37 year old mother of two minor children, denounces before the public opinion, the abuse to which has fallen victim to at the hands of the National Revolutionary Police, a repressive organism at the service of the dictator Fidel Castro.

Mrs. Castán is licensed in sports and physical fitness, and with said license she worked as a physical education teacher, she was let go from that job and commenced selling finger sandwiches in order to sustain her two young children and herself.  For this she has been fined more than $1,200 (national currency) on several occasions and she does not have any means with which to pay said fines.  She has also been pushed and beaten by agents of said organism.

Castán lives in deplorable conditions in a home which is completely deteriorated.  In spite of having applied on several occasions for help from the Popular Power - which according to the government it is the Power of the people - she has not received anything, except for the harsh treatment from the militaristic and totalitarian regime implanted in Cuba.

Many prisoners complain of the lack of nutrition, being that their families do not have enough food to take them in prison.  The adolescent denounces before the international public opinion this abuse committed by the Castro regime.

I ACCUSE - by Ferdinando Castro de Lardiller

http://www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/New%20Folder/cuba_ultimas2.html

December 17, 2001

I ACCUSE the unconstitutional government of Cuba, that has implanted a totalitarian militaristic regime for more than 42 years.

I ACCUSE the government of the autocrat Fidel Castro for crimes committed against political prisoners in every corner and through out the
entire island for more than four decades.

I ACCUSE the government of Cuba that maintains thousands of people in prison for the sole reason of not thinking in the same way as them and acting in favor of the dictator or for trying to abandon the country.

I ACCUSE the repressive system of Fidel Castro for the violations committed against political prisoners, the beatings, psychological abuse and ill-treatment which take place in the prisons of Cuba.

I ACCUSE the government of Cuba for the deployment of mercenary troops to Africa and countries in Latin America, wherein thousands of Cubans unnecessarily loose their lives and bring mourning to the people of Cuba.

I ACCUSE the government of Cuba for the enormous loss of lives in the Florida Straits, of those who yearn for freedom, who fled from the dictatorship of Castro.  For the sinking of the tugboat "13 de Marzo", the downing of the Brothers to the Rescue planes, the sinking of the boat at the mouth of the River Canimar and more recently the disappearance of 30 people among which were children.

I ACCUSE the government of Cuba for maintaining the largest minefield on the perimeter of North American Naval Base border in the Bay of Guantánamo, where dozens of people have lost their lives, mostly young people, because of the explosions of these lethal devices and dozens more have been mutilated by same.  None of these victims are North American.  For whom are these mines really meant for?

I ACCUSE the government of Cuba for the loss of lives of dozens of people, most of them young, whom have been riddled with bullets on the same perimeter by border patrols, while none of the victims are North American.  In realty, whom are these border patrols protecting?  Is it done in order to avoid the penetration of enemy forces into the system or to impede the exodus of Cubans?

I ACCUSE the government of Cuba for betraying the trust and hopes of Cubans when it betrayed the beautiful ideals which had been fought for until 1959.  According to the dictator, it is a revolution for the people and by the people, of the humble and for the humble; not for two brothers to monopolize the power of the island, that with demagogues methods that have manipulated the minds of the people and militarized all aspects of the economy and of the country, creating division and state exploitation.

I ACCUSE the government of Cuba for violating its own constitution of the Republic, fundamentally Article 1.

I ACCUSE the government of Cuba for the hunger and necessities which the Cuban people are going through.  Where workers earn low salaries in one kind currency while articles of necessity are sold in another kind of currency.

I ACCUSE the government of Cuba of enforcing extremely severe methods against those whom peacefully oppose it by using its powerful repressive system in order to maintain its monopoly on power, totally suppressing freedom of speech.  Converting the Cuban people into marionettes of a totalitarian, fundamentalist and exclusionary regime.

I ACCUSE the government of Cuba of after having commenced a revolution to end homelessness, it has turned it into a daily occurrence wherein in the province of Guantánamo alone there are 365 homeless people. The unemployment rate is extremely high, hospitals exist but there is not any medicine, except for in the hospitals for tourists where there are all kinds of medicines and excellent care for tourists only.

I ACCUSE the government of Cuba and its repressive system that when it takes actions against peaceful oppositionists it also affects their children; children who have finished their pre-university studies with excellent grades but in order to go on to university studies they have to enlist in the obligatory military service.  If upon the verification process executives of the Revolution Defense Committee and of the "Zona" state that they are children of counter-revolutionary parents, the statement is all that is needed for the child to be sent to the Juvenile Work Army in an remote mountainous area far from their home, where they send children who are poor students and workers and whom of bad social conduct.

And lastly, I ACCUSE the government of Cuba as the largest violator of Human Rights in the world.

In confirmation of my denouncement I am signing this declaration titled "I Accuse" on this 17th day of December, 2001.

Brutal repression during inauguration of library

LA HABANA, Cuba, December 26, 2001 (Reinaldo Cosano Alén /www.cubanet.org) - While Christian communities were celebrating the birth of Jesus this 25th of December, political and regular police officials, and members of paramilitary groups confiscated books and attacked participants in the inauguration of the independent library "Emmanuel".

The library, which is Evangelical in orientation, is located in the home of the Pastor Lázaro Iglesias Estrada, located in Florida, Province of Camagüey.

Combined forces of the police, State Security and numerous other individuals who do their work through Rapid Response Teams began to interfere commencing in the early morning hours.  They began to harass activists when they exited the library at approximately 9:00 AM.  In an attempt to cover the news, a reporter from the School of Independent Journalists of Camagüey, Carlos Brizuela Yera, was detained while trying to reach the home of Iglesias.

The reporter was arrested by an official of the political police whose last name is Echemendía and by other agents of that repressive group.

Juan Carlos González Leiva, who is blind, President of the Cuban Human Rights Foundation, one of those present, recounts:  "We protested exclaiming 'Long live Human Rights', I screamed 'Down with Fidel Castro!'  The agents began to strongly beat us.  Delio Laureano Requejo was hit hard on his clavicle and his arm detached from his shoulder.  They injured the mouth of journalist Normando Hernández González and gave him bruises all over his body.  Reporters Lexter Téllez Castro and Misley Delgado Bombino were also beaten; she was beaten with stick on her head.  Not even Pastor Iglesias or Joel García were unharmed.  Brizuela Yera's mouth was severely injured, while Marcelo Tier Pérez, in spite of being 70 years old, was also beaten.  I was hit on my ribs, they broke my glasses and tore my clothes, they left me almost naked."

Blanca González, mother of Normando Hernández González, stated: "The library could not be inaugurated because the operation against it was monstrous.  It was terrible.  They pushed them, they beat them, they forcibly put them in patrol cars.  They gathered a mob to offend the activists whom would scream at them through megaphones "worms" and many other offensive words.  It is the worst thing I have witnessed in my life."

All of the library's books were confiscated by an official.

"Emmanuel", a word in Hebrew, means God is with us.

* Alarming increase of violence in Guantánamo.

 http://www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/New%20Folder/cuba_ultimas2.html

(GUANTANAMO,CUBA, December 21, 2001) – At 1:30 AM, December 20, 2001, the 20 year old young man Fraki Ramos Vargas, arrived at the provincial hospital Clínico Quirúrgico “Agustino Neto”, in this city, after having been attacked by a man named Ricardito de Saltadero, with a machete, causing life-threatening injuries.  Upon his arrival at the hospital, two blood transfusions were immediately administered to him due to the amount of blood he had lost.

Ramos Vargas, whose job is with the Vigilance and Protection Corps of Cuba-Café in Bayate, municipality El Salvador, was working when across from his post a fight broke out, which he went to try to stop and ended up being gravely injured.

The daily increase of violent acts in this city is alarming, a product of the economic situation and out of the necessities of the population which remains psychologically disturbed.  A violent act arises out of the most minimal incident.  Corruption and drugs are also factors which greatly influence when swindlers try to steal from vendors this products which are dangerous to humans.

As to the totalitarian government of Cuba, represented by the autocrat and dictator Fidel Castro, in his psychosis to discredit the government of the United States and with his desire to manipulate Cuban minds, he creates campaigns through his monopolized means diffusion, creating an image of violence in that country, forgetting that Cuba has the highest rate of criminal activity.

However, what happens in Cuba which affects the population subject to a regime of terror, he keeps to himself, showing to the world what in reality he is not.

Internal espionage continues to grow in Cuba

http://www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/New%20Folder/cuba_ultimas2.html

(GUANTANAMO,CUBA, December, 2001) – Since Thursday, December 13th, the people have come to know, through district meetings of the Popular Power, of the creation by popular councils of vigilante couples.

These couples, men or women, earn a salary between $300.00 to $400.00 monthly (each) and work undercover, with their fundamental mission being to inform the Interior Ministry and other organisms, of everything that is happening in the city or in the country.  If it is regarding the construction of a house, the head of the Interior Ministry is informed, which sends a team of inspectors to verify the legality of the materials; if it is regarding someone selling something, the chief of the National Revolutionary Police sector is notified in the hopes that measures will be taken against him; if it relates to a visit from a foreigner or from an oppositionist to the system, the State Security is notified.

Since the first years of the triumph of the revolution, the autocrat Fidel Castro, in order to maintain his monopoly of power, created organizations such as the Revolutionary Defense Committees, Systems of Vigilance such as the S.U.V.P. and has spent several millions in espionage.

Recently, cellular telephone were given to the Revolutionary Defense Committees in order for them to have direct communication with the Interior Ministry, and today these vigilante couples are created by popular councils whose identities are only known to the ministry.

If this extreme vigilance continues, next the Cuban dictator will be installing hidden video cameras in each home in order to know what happens inside of them.

Why is Fidel Castro so scared of loosing his monopoly on power?  Is he not aware that more sooner than later he will have to account for all of the crimes he has committed and he will have to pay for them.

Girl almost run over due to violent acts of the Special System for the Protection of Government Interests

http://www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/New%20Folder/cuba_ultimas2.html

(GUANTANAMO, CUBA, December 17, 2001) - During the afternoon of Saturday, December 15, a girl was almost run over when an armored car belonging to the Special System for the Protection of Government Interests arrived at the store  "Los Muchachos” which deals in dollars and violently and heavily armed they got out of the car and pushed all of the people which were on the sidewalk waiting to go inside to buy, and among them was the aforementioned girl whom ended up on the street after having been pushed.

This frequent violent attitude by this security organism when it is time to pick up the money from these kinds of stores, on this occasion nearly cost the life of an innocent girl.  On other occasions, adults have been pushed to the floor by members of this group which is destined to protect the capital and properties of the dictator.

* Extreme poverty in Maquey and Maqueisito, Guantánamo

http://www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/New%20Folder/cuba_ultimas2.html

(GUANTANAMO, CUBA, December 17, 2001) - Residents of the towns of Maquey and Maqueisito complain of the extreme poverty which they are living with, wherein hunger and extreme misery make their mark on these two marginal towns.

From an early age, children have to carry sticks in order to help their parents make charcoal ovens in order sustain their families.

By the time some of the products, such as picadillo, from the small family rations reach these people it smells bad, they do not receive eggs nor do they receive fish.

In spite of being in an area which could distribute fish, the citizen that is caught fishing is fined with exuberant fines of up to $5 000.00, national currency.

Situations such as these expose the deceitful campaign of the Cuban government regarding its claim that there are not any towns in Cuba which are in poverty, when the truth is many citizens on repeated occasions go to sleep without eating.

Visit denied  to  political prisoner Alexander Lobaina Jiménez in Combinado de Guantánamo.

www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/latest_news2.html

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, December 16, 2001)–After being detained for 20 days in the Department of State Security, for his failed attempt to reach the Guantánamo Naval Base, Alexander Lobaina Jiménez, 31 years old, was taken to the provincial  prison of Combinado de Guantánamo, this past 8th of December.

According to prison  regulation,  every Tuesday, the relatives of the prisoners can meet with the authorities of this penal institution and then they are given 5 minutes with the prisoner.   Last Tuesday, Mrs. Katerine Ramírez, wife of the prisoner, after interviewing with the re-educator Amaury Hardy, he denied the 5 minutes visit with the prisoner, nor was she advised on how does the system for the visits work, or the size of the food bags allowed for the prisoners.

Lobaina is waiting for this charade of a trial, where he will be judged in a military tribunal when he is a civilian and has no bonds whatsoever with the military.   The intent of Lobaina Jiménez to leave the Island was motivated by the repression and harassment he’s been a is victim of; for  belonging  to organizations of opposition to the Castro regime like the Democratic Party November 30 “Frank Pais” and the Club of prisoners and former political prisoners in this city.

Bloodbath in Guantánamo

 www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/noticias/html

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, December 17, 2001) – Last Saturday at 10:00 am, the young lady Marlen Ferandis Rodiles, 33 years old, who lives at "calle Aguilera No. 55, e/ Antonio Saco y Sol", became the victim of a violent crime at the hands of her neighbour, Félix Brooks, 60 years old, whom approached Marlen from behind when she was entering her house with what little food gets rationed to the family, and without any kind of notice he began to attack her with a machete, severely injuring her head, arms, chest and back.

In this agonizing condition, Marlen yelled for help, which is when the aggressor scurried away, machete in hand, and went to his house which is next to Marlen's home.

One hour later, he was apprehended and in the presence of the police he said that he had already taken care of the first one, then it would be the barber's turn, later the grocer's turn, and continued in this fashion to list the people whom he want to bring to justice.  According to statements from neighbors those people had not done anything to him.

Félix Brooks, had already been sanctioned and served two sentences, the first for the rape of a minor and the second for a similar occurrence to that of last Saturday.  However, for several years neighbors have notified the police chiefs of this man's threats, and they have not taken any actions in this respect.

Today we see the result of a police force that does protect the interest of the people, on the contrary, it is a repressive organism that responds the interests of a totalitarian government.  It is the only responsible party that acts such as these occur as they could be avoided by enforcing some type of measure against people such as these.

I have witnessed one brother attacked another brother with a machete in their home and how the people witnessing the attack pled to police agents present at the scene to intervene.  Their response is that they can not get involved because it would be a domestic violation; however, when the police receives information that meat is being sold in a house, they knock the door down if they have to and go in to apprehend the vendor.

This is proof that the people of Cuba are the only ones whom suffer the rigor of a communist regime imposed against all democratic laws.

Possible enforcement of severe measures to oppositionists with ties to the Cuban Exile Community.

 www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/noticias/html

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, December 16 the 2001) – The Cuban State Security, repressive organism of the Castro's totalitarian regime, will begin enforcing extreme and severe measures, to those oppositionist whom through organizations or people in the Exile Community, denounce to the international community, the constant violations that the dictatorship perpetrates against the people in the island.

A source that wishes to remain anonymous explained that in response to the sentences given to the five Cuban spies by a Court in Miami, any oppositionist making denouncement to organizations or individuals in Exile, will be considered by the Cuban government as spying for the United States and similar measures will be enforced  as those taken against these five victims of the mental manipulation of the autocrat Fidel Castro.

As an oppositionist, I remind the Cuban ruler that that he owes the victory of his stagnated revolution to the media support in Cuba, back when Cuba had freedom of expression and freedom of the press, as well as to the media support and the financial help of the Cubans residing in the United States, especially in Miami; and after he rose to power he betrayed his people by enforcing demagogues methods, implanting a dictatorship characteristically violitory and terrorist state that maintains the Cuban people in a state of panic.

We are not spies. We want freedom for the people of Cuba and not the Castro regime. We want a democratic state where human rights are respected, without Castro.

Farmers not paid in Guantánamo
http://www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/noticias/html

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, December 13, 2001)  – The farmers, countrymen who live in the area of Felipinas, in the Municipality of Niceto Pérez in the Province of Guantánamo, denounce the fraud which the farming sector in Casimba has been employing against them.

These farmers, who in spite of their lack of resources for cultivation of the land and the adversity of the land in this area - mostly dry - last year sold to the aforementioned farming sector products such as coffee and pineapple which were commercialized by said entity during the same year, and to date they have yet to be paid for their merchandise.

The system of exploitation and the State capitalism of the Cuban government, not only exploits farmers, but it does not given any explanation as to why they have not paid them.

It also exploits all workers in the lower class of society whom are given salaries which are insufficient to eat, while the high class which is made up of military men of the Armed Revolutionary Forces and Interior Ministry, receive extremely high salaries in order to maintain the monopoly on power and count on extensive farm land and cattle which are attended to by cheap labor; the Armed Revelutionary Forces use recruits from the obligatory military service and the Interior Ministry uses prisoners whom are sometimes not paid for up to four months and they do not have any right to demand payment.

Sadly, we ask ourselves today and we search for a single instance where the government of Cuba is not a violator, it violates health, education, and the economy at all levels.

Number of dystrophic cases increases dramatically in Cuban prison "Combinado de Guantánamo"
http://www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/noticias/html

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, December 4, 2001)  - A denouncement was made last October 4th, before the international public opinion, of the existence of over 100 prisoners in the provincial prison of "Combinado de Guantánamo" that are in a dystrophic state, whom suffer from various illnesses and mental imbalance as a consequence of the lack of and/or poor nutrition.

Today, only 2 months since that date, the number of cases has increased to over 500 prisoners in the aforementioned prison, with stomach ailments such as ulcers and dizziness because of scarcity of food ingestion among other things.  In this prison, the penal population has a per capita of one cup of rice, poorly cooked and prepared unhygenically, and a cup of soup.  They are given lunch at 10:00 a.m. and dinner is given at 3:00 p.m., and they are given nothing else to eat until the next day.

According to the source, political prisoner Yulian Hernández, his family members have repeatedly complained about this situation.

It is important to note that every prisoner is removed from the rationing card for his family, so that theoretically, what little bit he was to have received at home would be given to him in jail - which is not done.

Meanwhile, the prison authorities of the penitenciary, headed by Lieutenant Jorge Chediak Pérez, Director, and second in command Major Pablo Reyes Cobas, Chief of the Interior Order (whom was demoted in April of 1999 for the crime of theft and was promoted again one year later), are the ones responsible for the nutritional food products destined for the prisoners in the aforementioned prison.

The people of Cuba are given bread made with flour contaminated by the government.

www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/noticias/html

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, December 13, 2001) - Public discontent as to the poor quality of bread in various bakeries in the city of Guantánamo is very evident when the bread deliveryman brings our daily bread, when numerous consumers protested because sometimes it is inedible.  The problems with the bread range from unidentified objects inside of the bread to an unpleasant roach odour, and almost always the bread must be eaten immediately because it turns sour and rancid very quickly.

This correspondent investigated through workers whom make bread and uncovered that many of the bakeries are using contaminated flour, which the government fumigated.  In some manufacturing centers they have assigned people to strain the raw material and on occasions dead roaches, other insects and rat excrement are found there.

The sources confirmed that a large number of consumers have presented their complaints before the administrative offices and at the same time have requested an answer, but the officials give diverse excuses, without explaining the truth to the people whom are inquiring.

Political prisoner denounces Guantánamo prison authorities
http://www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/noticias/html

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, December 6, 2001) - Prisoner René Sago la Llave denounces, before the national and international public opinion,  prison authorities of the provincial prison "Combinado de Guantánamo", specifically Major Pablo Reyes Cobas, Chief of Interior Order and well-known terrorist of the repressive incarcerating system.

The motives for which René denounces this hired killer stem from an incident last November 27th, which was witnessed by all of the prisoners in Cell No.16 and other prisoners in Ward 4-B, when on that day Major Pablo Reyes Cobas beat him, took him out of his cell and humiliated him, and beat him with harsh blows all the way to another room where he began strangling him, and stopped only because several prisoners intervened.

Upon the writing of this report, 6th of December, this prisoner is still unaware of the motives for the beating.  The following prisoners were witnesses:  Genaro Miranda Rodríguez, Francisco Samón Batalla, David Echeverría, Faviel and Yoelkis Olivares Arroyo, whom ask themselves "where is the justice for the people of Cuba?"

Prisoner of conscience denied medical attention

www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/noticias/html

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, December 13, 2001)  - Political prisoner and prisoner of conscience, Néstor Rodríguez Lobaina, continues being the victim of Castro's repressive and incarcerating regime.

On this occasion, this prisoner whom had an appointment at the Máxilo Facial Department of the Provincial General Hospital "Agustino Neto", on Wednesday
morning, the "Combinado de Guantánamo" prison authorities refused to take him to the appointment.

Rodríguez Lobaina who is serving his third sentence for political reasons, is carrying out an act of civil disobedience against prison authorities since last Sunday (December 9th), in protest of the violations which the lackeys and henchmen of the militaristic and totalitarian system of the dictator commit against him and Human Rights.

It is not the first time that prison authorities enforce this type of abusive measure against the prisoner.  He has been repeatedly denied medical attention including medical attention which he needed for injuries he received from beatings given under orders from prison authorities.  Denial of medical attention happens frequently to political prisoners in Cuba.

City under siege because of celebration of International Human Rights Day

www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/noticias/html

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, December 11, 2001)  - Combined forces of the Department of State Security and the National Revolutionary Police of Castro's regime, put into action a strong operation which commenced at 6:00 am on December 10, rendering the central part of this city completely under siege, as were some of the houses of leaders of the opposition in Guantánamo.

The operation took place with the purpose of impeding the celebration for the 53rd anniversary of the Declaration of Human Rights, and a planned manifestation was to have taken place commencing at 9:00 am at "José Martí" park, and the procession was to have proceeded to the "Pedro Agustín Pérez" plaza, everyone wearing a white article of clothing.  Also to have taken place was the reading of a document and the handing out of pamphlets of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights to the people in general.

In order to silence the popular outcry from the people, these repressive organisms which are at the service of the dictator Fidel Castro, on November 9th, summoned the following members of the opposition:  Ferdinando Castro de Lardiller, Delegate, Eduardo Alberto Quintana Arbois, Secretary of Public Relations, both members of the Democratic Party November 30th "Frank País"; Luis Torres Cardosa, independent journalist; and Héctor René Roque, Vice President of the Cuban Youth Movement for Democracy.  They were strongly repressed and threatened by Colonel Ladislao Benítez, Chief of the Department of State Security in the province of Guantánamo; Mayor Calviño, 2nd in command of the confrontation unit; Orelvis Frómeta and Bartolo, Operations Officials of the aforementioned unit of political police.

Ladislao Benítez, aggressively stated to Ferdinando Castro de Lardiller that he was tired of him, that not only was he in the insignificant group of the 30th (Democratic Party 30th of November), but that he was also in other insignificant groups and that up until now they had been tolerant with him, but that he would be held responsible for whatever any organization in this city would do, that they would beat him and take him to prison until the day of trial and that they would not be violating anything.

As to Eduardo Alberto Quintana Arbois and Héctor Rene Roque they were also threatened; the first one threatened with the destruction of his fax, not allowing him to leave the country and a beating; the second one was threatened with the continued denial of obtaining his white card (document necessary for leaving the country).   Luis Torres Cardosa was respectfully told that he could not pass through that area again.

Regarding Luis Díaz Sánchez, President of the Cuban Youth Movement for Democracy and Alberto Martínez Fernández, President of the Political Prisoners and Ex-Political Prisoners Club were threatened in their homes.

Also on the 10th of December, after having surrounded the homes of the aforementioned oppositionists, the following were the object of a blatant and constant persecution:  Luis Díaz Sánchez, Ferdinando Castro de Lardiller, Juan Carlos Herrera Acosta, Luis Torres Cardosa y Ramón López León.

In spite of this and under siege, persecution and harassment, a group consisting of 18 people were able to carry out an activity in La Milagrosa Catholic Church, which was also surrounded.  We were handing out the Universal Declaration of Human Rights from the front steps of the church to all that would enter or exist, all the while they were threatening us from the sidewalk and street with patrol cars, motorcycles and cars known as Ladas.

Denounced to The International Community, Eviction As Means of Repression.

www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/noticias/html

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, December 14 the 2001) - Last Friday, December 7, a denouncement was made before the international public opinion regarding the eviction of Bertha de la Rosa Morando, 62 years old who was the owner of the home she was living in for over 40 years.  She was evicted from the home she inherited from her parents.

She was evicted along with her pregnant daughter and small grandson; measure applied by the government against this former political prisoner who served 3 years in prison for a crime against the integrity and stability of the nation, Sanctioned in the cause 107/70.  In said occasion she was robbed of her jewels which were valued according to the tribunal in $52 000.00 dollars,  and to this date the government has not returned the jewels to Betha.

Today, after interviewing this victim of the repressive system of the autocrat's Fidel Castro, one can see the striking interest of the dictatorship to apply extremely severe and unscrupulous measures to those that opposed the regime.

De la Rosa Morado is presently at the mercy of God and the help of some relatives that have given her shelter until she solves her problem, which by the way, won't have a solution, for when she goes to State Agencies she is mistreated for the only reason of being a former political prisoner.

Also, her daughter Sucelt Savón , 29 years old, is victim of the despotism of the Castro régime which did not take into account her advanced pregnancy when they threatened to drag her when the body of inspectors and police forces were in the process of evicting them.  There were more than 200 people and a dozen of activists of human rights outside the home that yelled in disgrace for this violation.

It is also necessary to point out that according to work sanction in Sucelt’s labor file, she was expelled from the educational sector on December 10, 1997 for simply having presented a request for her legal exit of the country.

We are requesting the international public opinion to follow closely this case, where the violator and unconstitutional government of Cuba have left homeless and destitute this family.

We forwarded this accusation to the emigration and naturalization department (INS) of the Interest Section of the United States where Bertha de la Rosa Morando is registered with the file A25 458 822 or the CU-29432, so that their case is reconsidered for the sad and painful situation they are presently going through.

Insufficient supply of vegetables to the hard-working people of Guantánamo.

www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/noticias/html

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, December 16, 2001) –Vegetables, used by the hard-working people to stretch what is sold in the meagre monthly family basket, consistent of 5 pounds of rice, 5 pounds of sugar, 20 ounces of grains and a rationing of meat products, is scarce at the present time in the city of Guantánamo due to disagreements between companies which supply those provision to the town and making their supply very unstable.

According to the weekly publication “Venceremos”, official organ of the provincial committee of the Communist Party of Cuba in the town, residents in the neighbourhood San Justo, are concerned because the plantains sold to the people in the plaza at Street 11th in the corner of Prado, are not healthy for human consumption, maintaining the same price that those that are of good quality.

While consumers give justified complaints, no vegetables have been sold in the past two months in the plaza located at “calle Norte e/ Cuartel y Ahogado”. And no agreement amongst the above mentioned suppliers are expected in a near future.

Harassment of independent unionist.

www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/noticias/html

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, December 6, 2001) - Independent unionist, Manuel Lantigua Domínguez, 42 years old, affiliated with the Unitarian Workers Council of Cuba, is being victimized by the relentless pursuit and harassment of the repressive Cuban system, commencing on November 3rd he was summoned to Unit 4 of the National Revolutionary Police by the Lieutenant Iraelio Muñoz, Section Chief, whom under orders from the Department of State Security, threatened to prosecute this unionist and ex-political prisoner for crimes against the State Security.

Lantigua Domínguez, labelled as a counter-revolutionary, from the time of that summons to this date, is being submitted to intensive vigilance by said official at the service of the dictator, who goes daily to the house of the person responsible for the vigilance of the dictatorship's Revolutionary Defence Committee to give information about this unionist.

Manuel has maintained a non-conformist attitude with the totalitarian regime of the dictator Fidel Castro, which has also caused him to suffer the severity of Castro's prisons.

* Political Prisoner in "Combinado de Guantánamo" Prison Denied Medical Attention.
www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/noticias/html

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, November 29, 2001) - Political prisoner, Ernesto Lucas Corral Cabrera, 27 years old, who suffers from arterial hypertension, is being victimized by the abuse of power and harassment by the repressive encarcerating system of the dictator Fidel Castro. This political prisoner is constantly treated badly, food is given to him in terrible conditions, sometime even rotten.

Corral Cabrera, is not allowed sunlight and is also the victim of isolations and beatings, and he is denied the medical attention which his illness requires.

These violations and inhumane measures taken by Captain Víctor Reyes Cobas, against this political prisoner, is because of the firm and uncompromised attitude of Corral Cabrera, against the totalitarian regime of Fidel Castro.

In protest of said measures, Ernesto screams out against the dictator, which angers hired killers of the prison, whom with baton in hand, arrived at Company 1 of Ward A-500 and after having beaten him they violently pushed him all the way to the punishment cell.

The henchmen, at the service of the tyrant Castro, in the Guantánamo provincial prison, not only deny medical attention to the prisoners, but they also subject them to permanent cruel and inhumane treatment.

www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/noticias/html

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, November, 2001) - With the disappearance of 30 Cubans in the rough waters of the Florida Straits, the Cuban government has ignited the flames of the political campaign against the United State of North America, alleging that the Cuban Adjustment Act is responsible for the loss of innocent lives, basically children's lives whom are taken by their parents and end up drowned in said waters.  But analyzing the subject of emigration, we all are aware that from the commencement of Cuba as a nation, our country would receive immigrants from Asia, Africa, Europe and countries of America; however, since the 1st of January 1959 Cubans began to emigrate like flocks of birds, the only difference being that on this occasion it was not due to a natural process but a political one.

Is it really the Cuban Adjustment Act that incites the people of Cuba to risk their lives on such a dangerous journey?  I believe not - the economic, political and social situation in Cuba is in crisis.  Whoever does not have dollars are helpless.  The salary of a Cuban is approximately ten dollars a month, some articles of necessity can only be obtained in stores that deal in dollars.  The economic situation of workers turns their lives and that of their families into a living hell.

Regarding the political aspect, there is no alternative; the Electoral Law (72) which regulates everything having to do with elections in Cuba, is designed in such a way that the peaceful opposition does not have a place in which to participate.  In this way, term after term the communists re-elect themselves, guaranteeing the continuation of power to the followers of Castro.

Regarding the social aspect, the difference exists between those that by some way have access to dollars and those that have to conform to a measly salary, and the one that exists between these two social sub-classes (the ruling class) whom do not need dollars to resolve their problems, because they have everything, they make my country a place of uncertainty, where many prefer to risk their precious lives instead of taking on the demagogy.

On the other hand, the Cuban government blames the United States of not going through with migratory agreements, while the Interior Ministry, following the lines of the government, hold people that have been given visas to enter into North American territory, among them are Human Rights activists and health care personnel, the latter of which are held back because of regulations of the Public Health Ministry.  This begs the question - Can the holding of people who have visas encourage people to take this dangerous journey?

The authorities have also categorized the Cuban Adjustment Act as murderous and recently as terrorist; but the Cuban government has forgotten that they placed land mines on the lateral border of the fence on the boarder with the (U.S.) Naval Base of Guantánamo, with the objective, according to them, of containing the North American Army in case of an attack, and I ask Mr. Castro:

How many invaders have the mined fields stopped?  If permitted to respond, I would answer none, because the North American Army on the base has never attempted to invade our territory.  How many Cubans have been killed and mutated by said mines?  It is a very high number, but I will only mention two; brothers Bienvenido Rodríguez Avila and Denis Y. Avila, who were torn to pieces on July 5, 1992.

How many Cubans have died, shot to death, by border patrols armed, as in the days of slavery, whom assassinate slaves who run away from the master, the numbers are high but I will only mention three:  Luís Angel Valverde Linfernal,  Iscandel Malera Pedraza;  shot on January 18, 1994 and Lisandro Rodríguez López, 21 years old, assassinated on September 27, 1993.

And what of the role of Castro's followers in the last crisis of the rafters when they would not allow the people of Guantanamo take to the ocean in Yateritas, the beach to the East of the City of Guantánamo, whom had to go all the way to Laguna de Baconao to reach the Naval Base.  Many of us are aware that to the South of the old Province of Oriente the ocean current from El Paso de Los Vientos across from Maisí to Manzanillo, which would mean that from Yateritas the current would carry the rafters to the military enclave, but those that took to the ocean in Baconao had to navigate against the current, a situation which cost the lives of many rafters.  How could they now present themselves before the international and national public opinions as defenders of life?  The members of the peaceful opposition know what they and their policemen are capable of.

We will never forget that with a burst of shrapnel they decapitated Gerardo González Alvarez who was like a brother in Boniato Prison, we will not forget that they let Pedro Luis Boitel die after that prolonged hunger strike.  We will never forget the hell in which our brothers in this fight are living through, incarcerated in different prisons in the country for the sole reason of peacefully dissenting.

We will not forget the sinking of the "13 de marzo" tugboat which cost the lives of 41 people, among which were several children.

How could we forget the events of the Canimar River in Matanzas, the events of Cojimar in La Habana, the four lives of Brothers to the Rescue, the hatred and the division between all Cubans and those of us that have an alternative approach, between those that are on the Island and those that have gone in exile? Fidel Castro knows that his dictatorship is the last dictatorship in the continent and it seems that he has made his difference with the neighbors to the North as a necessary evil.  The embargo certainly affects the everyday Cuban; but we Cubans need the suspension of the internal embargo which impedes the development of an internal economy, that does not permit us to use our creativity in the economic process of the country, even though I am of the belief that if the United States removes the blockage, the dictator will strengthen economically and this will make it more repressive.

Cubans look for changes, as is stated in the Varela Project, so that our country will be prosperous, so that the children of this country will not have to die trying to emigrate, so that the dream of Apostle of Martí will become reality.

We are peaceful, we learned this from Gandhi and Luther King, but at least King was able to organize marches in Montgomery and later in all of the country, we are not even permitted this.

We Human Rights activists are aware that the State Department follows us on every 28th of January so that we will not lay flowers to the Apostle (Jose Marti), and also on the 24th of February (day of shooting of Brothers to the Rescue planes) and 13 of July (day of the sinking of the tugboat "13 de marzo") we are detained in order to keep us from throwing flowers into the ocean, as we are watched on the 10th of December (Human Rights Day) so that we will not hand out the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, it does not do the dictator any good to have the people know their rights.

The Country is an altar, not a pedestal, said the Apostle.  The country is an altar that should be honored, it is not a chair for the tyrant to sit in and manipulate the people through the use of totalitarian laws.

You could state what you believe, that is part of Democracy, but remember Mr. Castro, he who has a glass roof, should not through stones at his neighbor.

PRESS RELEASE

The leadership of the National Civil Movement of Cuba acknowledges the legitimacy and nobility of the sentiments that drove three of our brothers, all members of the Democracy Movement, to enter Cuban territorial waters, which because of their nationality these waters are also their own, to throw a floral offering precisely in the place of the abominable crime in remembrance of the victims of the Tugboat “13 de Marzo”.
Likewise, we acknowledge the nobility and just character which marks the North American Nation, and we ask of the Government and particularly the Honorable President of the United States of America, his benevolence in the case of our brothers, Ramón Saúl Sánchez, Pablo Rodríguez and Alberto Pérez whom, by Presidential Decree will appear before Federal Court in the City of Key West, precisely on such a significant day as that of December 10th.

The Cuban people are captives of a totalitarian system which does not permit, even some to cry, which when fleeing from its grips they have been massacred at sea.  We, whom from within the Island suffer repression, harassment, and persecution for lifting our voices, have felt what our brothers, like the ones that will be tried,  are going through.
On Monday, December 10, in solidarity with out brothers, the National Civil Movement of Cuba, joined by Cuban Mothers for Liberty, will take part in a complete fast (no food), assembled in our headquarters in the City of Santa Clara. Likewise, we will be present in the caravan which will leave from the headquarters of the Democracy Movement in the City of Miami at 8:00 AM represented by Mr. Norman del Valle, whom has graciously agreed to hold up the name of our organization.

During such bitter hours as the ones in which our brother in exile are living, we are with them.  May our modest solidarity serve as encouragement!

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, November, 2001) - Bringing a new child into the world, is an act of love, more beautiful than anything else in humanity, it is for that reason that during the gestation period woman are supposed to enjoy a harmonious ambiance, far from every day worries.

Specialists assure that a pregnancy marked by worries, abnormal situations, malnutrition and even those irregularities that can alter the mother's physical and emotional state, can affect the normal development of the fetus and runs the risk of bring a child with health problems into the world.

According to experts, women should give birth at approximately 42 weeks, although some may be premature and others late, when they are in their 36th week of gestation and as a result of the regulations imposed on necessities for newborns, they are given a card in order to acquire clothing and other essentials, but it is said that mothers cannot buy the necessities for the care of the baby until three months after having given birth.

Mothers who have had more than one child may be able to put some little things away, others count on the generosity of family or a neighbour, but what of first time mothers?  Or those that are not lucky enough to have someone give them diapers and used sleepwear?  Can you imagine the mothers that go into premature labor?  Could it be that the government is taking into account if the child dies during birth or in the first three months of life and in that way it saves on dispensing those necessities?

Why can't future mothers be able to give birth peacefully knowing that their babies will leave the hospitals with new clothes?

Would this have something to do with the North American blockade?

Believe me, the more I search, I can find no explanation.  I know of more than one case, wherein the small ones are between one and six months old and do not have any baby care necessities.  I will not reveal their identities, so that State Security does not blame them for inciting me to write these reflections.

* Prisoners demand medical presence in "Combinado de Guantánamo" Prison
www.puenteinfocubamiami.org/noticias/html

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, November 29, 2001) – Prisoners which find themselves incarcerated in the prison called “Combinado de Guantánamo”, denounce  before national and international public opinion, the situation regarding the medical positions of this prison.

Occurring with repeated frequency, the penal military authority decide to take a prisoner which suffers from some illness to the infirmary where the prisoner is hit with the hard reality that there is in fact no medical personnel to help him, not the Dr. Aracelia, chief of such position, nor the nurse Marlene, which violates the established requirements of the Department of Health, which state that, in any medical position there should always be present a health official.

The penitentiary system in Cuba is unique to the world.  The whole island is a prison with an area of 110,882 Km. and 3,735 Km. of coastline, Cuba has a penal population of 11,217,000 prisoners; in addition, inside of this great prison are many more prisoners, in where those that have been incarcerated, are submitted to an extremely cruel and degrading treatment, like the one which occurs in “Combinado de Guantanamo”.

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, November 29, 2001) – The family members of prisoners of the penal of maximum severity at “Combinado de Guantánamo”, complain of the mistreatment that they systematically suffer from, on behalf of the Lt. Coronel Jorge Chediak Perez, Chief of the Unit, when they go to visit the condemned of this prison.

This henchman, paid by the dictator, speaks to the familiy members in a very vulgar way and later has them form lines, underneath the searing sun, where they are instructed to wait for long periods of time, so that after a rigorous search, they may see their relatives.

In addition, after passing through this extremely degrading treatment,  these relatives which have come from other cities and far distances to visit with the prisoner, have frequently been denied the visit and are given some excuse.

The prison system of the autocrat, Fidel Castro, has customarily transferred prisoners to prisons in cities and towns far from their place of residence in order to totally isolate them and make visits from family members more difficult.

(GUANTÁNAMO, CUBA, November 29, 2001) – Yeisnier Villar Pérez, 24 years old, a prisoner in the prison of maximum severity "Combinado de Guantánamo", was brutally beaten by Captain Víctor Reyes Cobas. Villar Pérez, when he refused to participate in "infantry exercises", long forced marches.

Yeisnier Villar Pérez, told his aggressor that he was not in the military, and should not have to participate in said exercises and much less when he was a victim of the repressive encarcerating system, which had deprived him of all his benefits, such as the suspension of visits from his family and the right to conditional freedom.

Only 17 days ago, a prison guard known by the name of "Bouli", together with other guards, also savagely beat Villar Pérez, leaving him unconscious and bleeding from his ears, for the simple reason of asking for more security because he was in fear for his life on Floor 3-C.

Yeisnier Villar Pérez, has been confined in the punishment cell A-500, where the presence of rodents and mosquitoes abounds, in addition to lacking in electric current and in water.

Under the prison system of the dictator Fidel Castro, not only do the prisoners suffer cruel and degrading treatment, but they are also deprived, systematically of fundamental needs such as food, medicine and water.

December 2, 2001

(Villa Clara, Cuba) - The trial of René Montes de Oca Martija, President of the Human Rights Party of Cuba Affiliated with Andrei Zajarov, was held in Ciego de Ávila, on November 29, 2001, where he was charged with the crime of evasion.

Esther Valdez, wife of the political prisoner, informed the director of the Information Center on Democracy, Mercedes Clementina Constantin Figueroa, that during the trial, while the tribunal condemned the pacifist leader to 1 year and 4 months in prison, she and other relatives of the prisoner which were present at the trial, protested the imposed sentence, and the response from the tribunal magistrates was that it was not them that were sanctioning the prisoner but it was the people of Cuba.

The trial of the oppositionist ended with screams of "LONG LIVE HUMAN RIGHTS" from other oppositionists and family members whom were present at the trial.

Esther Valdez adds, that several hours later, they were taken to the closest office of the National Revolutionary Police, fined 20 pesos each and threatened that they would be detained and serve long sentences for that kind of uproar.
